Prison Director Samantha Brennan has officially submitted her resignation from the top spot at the Department of Corrections.

Adelup Policy Director Carlo Branch confirmed the governor's office is in receipt of Brennan's resignation letter which was released to media.

In the letter, Brennan writes "it has been my honor to work alongside many outstanding employees who are truly dedicated public servants. These unsung officers, administrative and support staff report for duty day in and day out and perform to the highest standard."

Brennan had endured a rocky tenure as director with DOC staff penning two anonymous letters sharply criticizing working conditions at the prison and Brennan's leadership abilities. The prison has also been marred by a rash of recent inmate escapes.

Just this week, Acting Deputy Director Joe Carbullido took over the operations of DOC and yesterday Branch had said that Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero remained confident in Brennan's ability to lead at the prison. <p id="breakId_SPECIAL_pdf-1574408967103_WILL_RENDER_HTML_"></p><span id="mce_marker" data-mce-type="bookmark">?</span>

Yesterday Adelup also said that Brennan would be focusing on the expedited hiring of 40-60 corrections officers, but now it looks like the prison and the administration will instead be expediting the hiring of a new director.

Branch said Carbullido will assume acting director duties and that Adelup would comment on Brennan's replacement when appropriate.

In a statement, Acting Gov. Josh Tenorio said "I am deeply thankful for her work-especially in difficult times. Sam never broke faith with her belief that a small group of people could work to make things better for the community we love."

Brennan's resignation letter said she urges the "expeditious implementation of broader long term goals that are integral to the DOC mission." those long term goals, according to Brennan - "physical upgrades, increased staffing, improved working conditions and greater attention to health education and rehabilitative services that are the benchmarks of a 21st century detention and corrections mission that is humane."

We called Brennan to get a comment on her resignation, but we received no response.
