The day after Thanksgiving is Black Friday, following that there is Cyber Monday and the next day is one that means the world to us here at KUAM: Giving Tuesday. It's a global movement that started in 2012 by non-profit organization in New York.

"It's heavily rooted in social media so they wanted to see what happened and it just exploded I think it's in over 200 countries all fifty states and including our territory, all the way over here in Guam," said KUAM CEO Marie Calvo Monge.

In 2013, the KUAM CareForce joined in the campaign and opened it up for the entire island community to partake in. "This was way to just collectively put together a campaign and then get other organizations, schools, businesses involved to join us," she added.

Monge said the KUAM CareForce is the company's brand for service initiatives within the community. For this particular day of giving, the KUAM family comes together for weekly working sessions a couple months prior to the date to determine the theme.

"And with that theme accordingly we partner with organizations that fit under that umbrella, for instance last year our theme was shelter Tuesday, so we identified shelters around Guam as our beneficiaries," she said.

A past giving Tuesday theme that our Jason Salas recalls, as he said, "I just said right off the top of my head okay if I was going to do this all by myself, I want to give a bunch of teddy bears to kids in the pediatric ward, and her eyes got as big as globes and she was like really."

However, due to hospital restrictions, teddy bears were not allowed... and the idea evolved. As a team, blankets were given to the children in need.

On Giving Tuesday, all KUAM employees are on a mission, explains Calvo-Monge. "And another thing we do about it our Giving Tuesday marathon this place is like a ghost town because everybody fits into their work day something to do," she said.

On the GivingTuesday website under case studies, you will find Guam's past efforts documented. Recently, the international campaign launched a giving Tuesday kids... and that may just be KUAM's this year.

You can make Guam a better place and you feel really, really good about yourself but the bigger thing is you have improved the quality of someone else's life and while you are doing all of that you end up inspiring others in addition. And I think that's the gift that keeps giving. They say in order to find yourself, lose yourself in the service of others," she said.
