Vice Speaker Telena Nelson's office clarified the Department of Corrections has until the end of today, Wednesday, Sept. 11, to respond to a Freedom of Information Act request Nelson made regarding a federal grant and other issues.

Nelson is the vice chair of the Committee on Public Safety. She sent a FOIA last Thursday to DOC Director Samantha Brennan requesting information on erroneous releases of inmates and detainees, DOC's organizational structure and shift change procedure, reports of assaults on DOC Officers and pepper spray training.

These are items Nelson says go hand in hand with a $250,000 federal grant that will reach expiration at the end of this month.

The grant money was awarded to DOC three years ago from the Department of the Interior for the agency to hire a company to conduct an assessment and Master Plan to ensure safety and growth at DOC.

Over the years two RFP's have been issued but nothing has ever been awarded. Last week Brennan told KUAM the latest RFP process was under review. DOC has until Sept. 30 to use it or lose it.

Brennan can respond to Nelson's request or ask for an extension.
