The first-ever 5G distance learning class was launched from Guam today through Docomo Pacific's 5G Lab.

It featured interaction in a virtual classroom between students from Jose Rios Middle School and students from four junior high schools in Fukuoka Japan. The topic for the collaborative learning event was "the impact of marine plastic waste on the environment."

"Two of the big applications that I see for 5G are telemedicine and distance learning," Company President and CEO Roderick Boss. "And so I think that what this does is open up a much broader world for education on Guam. Anybody that comes in and sees this application they instantly think, wow, it feels like I'm there, and so I think the kids really enjoy it."

Next-generation 5G wireless technology features ultra-high-speed broadband connections, which Boss says they continue to test ahead of an eventual commercial launch.

"Actually last week we just introduced voice over LTE, that's a pre-requisite to launching 5G, so now we have that available on several different handset models and it will continue to roll out on more and more handset models so that's kind of preparation for the time we're gonna be able to actually have commercial 5G here," Boss said.

While there's no specific launch date yet, Docomo continues its "Open Partner Program" for local companies and individuals to be able to test the 5G capabilities
