Mission accomplished. The 5 Deeps expedition has successfully hit rock bottom in the Marianas Trench.

Years of planning, hundreds of millions of dollars and the drive to visit the five deepest points in each of the world's oceans - expedition was on Guam to dive Challenger Deep - what's known as the deepest point in the Marianas Trench.

Victor Vescovo was aboard the Limiting Factor in the minutes before making a solo dive seven miles down. With the crew of the Pressure Drop they made all kinds of history on this trip, logging four dives in eight days to the bottom - two of them solo Veskovo dives - and one dive to the Sirena Deep.

About four hours after being cleared to dive, Veskovo made his touchdown.

The control room cheered and congratulated him.

While on the bottom, Veskovo collected samples and observed deep sea creatures like the Arrowtooth eel, Cusk eel, Grenadier and Mariana Sailfish.

Several hours later, Veskovo would begin the long ascent, coming up from the fourth of his five dives.

"Almost exactly 12 hours about 3 ½ down, four hours on the bottom, I think the longest anyone's ever been on the bottom of Challenger Deep and then about fours up," he said. "I went through pretty much all of my electrical power, then had to be swapping batteries around and circuits around. It was a great journey, saw some really interesting things on the bottom."

While Vescovo did spot some amazing sea life, international media is making much of the plastic garbage Vescovo says he saw on the bottom.

Next stop for the 5 Deeps expedition, the Tonga Trench and then it's on to the 5th and final dive - the Malloy deep in the arctic ocean.
