Just last week, the Department of Public Health and Social Services warned of a measles outbreak in Washington state.

While they continue to monitor the situation due to many traveling to and from the region, Public Health also has an eye on a deadly outbreak of the disease much closer to the island--in the Philippines.

"Due to frequent travel of residents between Guam and the U.S. or the Philippines, it is possible that the disease may be brought here," according to a Public Health release. "The DPHSS encourages individuals to review their shot record to ensure they are up-to-date on all routine vaccinations before traveling to any destination. Ask your doctor if anyone in your family needs vaccines."

As of Feb. 11, the Epidemiology Bureau of the Department of Health in the Philippines reported 4,302 cases of measles with 70 deaths from Jan. 1 to Feb. 9, according to Public Health. Most cases are found in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Western Visayas, and Northern Mindanao. Approximately one in four measles cases have occurred in babies under 9 months of age.

Public Health recommends that persons traveling to any destination ensure they are vaccinated for measles (given in combination with the mumps and rubella vaccines) at least four to six weeks before departing.
