More than 4,000 people make up Guam’s Korean community and after decades of making this island their home, they’re ready to celebrate.

Today, residents and visitors are invited to the first Korean Festival at the Joseph Flores Memorial Park at Ypao.

“We’ve been here for a very long time but Korea has never had a chance to shine,” Thomas Son, the Korean Association director of culture said.

The local event coincides with the Korean Harvest Festival in autumn, when Chuseok, Korean Thanksgiving Day, is celebrated.

According to the Korean Tourism Organization, it’s one of the most important holidays in Korea where families get together to share stories and thank their ancestors.

“We’re hoping that the Korean Festival will be able to show our local community other cultural aspects and the festive spirit of our people during the harvest,” Son said.

You can expect lots of Korean food, cultural performances using traditional Korean instruments, dancing, traditional Korean wear and even the more contemporary K-Pop.

Park Jun Young, a Korean transplant from the band Junyfore will perform at the festival. You’ll also get a taste of K-Pop with other dance performances.

“We’ve always had small events within our community. But now, there Koreans have prominent businesses, companies they own hotels. Businesses are growing,” Son said. “It’s going to be a good time.”

The Korean Festival will take place from 4 to 11 p.m. at the main pavilion next to Ypao Beach.
