In the midst of federal charges, Guam Medical Transport's owners announced that they've shut down operations. Two of their own have already pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, but GMT's owners continue to deny any wrongdoing.

Shortly after the court accepted general manager Jared Ada and billing manager Trevor Cruz's plea agreements, GMT owners Clifford Shoemake and Casey Connor as well as executive assistant Nicholas Shoemake were indicted on multiple counts of conspiracy to commit health care fraud, health care fraud, and money laundering. Between March 2010 through March 2014, the defendants allegedly engaged in a scam to defraud Medicare and Tricare by submitting over $32 million in bogus claims resulting in about $11 million in payments to which they weren't entitled. The three allegedly used the proceeds to pay for vacations and other personal expenses.

In a press release issued Tuesday, GMT maintains their innocence. It reads, in part, "Pastor Shoemake, Nicholas and Casey never conspired to collect anything that wasn't rightfully due to the company. GMT has been diligent in following Medicare guidelines. The company invested a lot to insure its billing practices are legitimate and precise. GMT's ownership, management and staff have been trained to adhere to Medicare standards and guidelines. GMT believes the federal government's charges against the Shoemakes and the company are false and believe they will be exonerated." As for Ada and Cruz, GMT states it "does not trust any plea bargain that misrepresents the facts and is obtained under duress and without proper legal representation."

The Shoemakes moved to Guam from Saipan six years ago where Pastor Cliff is the head pastor for New Covenant Life Church. The release adds that Cliff, his wife Denise, and son Nicholas continue to be guided by God and his teachings and have not and will not commit a crime against Guam's residents, the federal, or local government.

As expected, the Shoemakes and Connor pleaded not guilty to the charges. GMT has also announced that the company has been forced to close their doors.

Clifford Shoemake, Casey Connor, and Nicholas Shoemake are scheduled to appear back in court on April 11 for jury trial and selection.
