Betel nut use is something many of us saw growing up, a common practice associated with cultures in both the Pacific and Asia regions. However, many don't realize that consuming betel nut can have deadly consequences.

Dr. Yvette Paulino told KUAM News, "The first type of chewing is those who chew the nut by itself, these are individuals who tend to swallow while they're chewing it, the other group would be those who chew other ingredients particularly adding tobacco lime." but why do people chew in the first place? Dr. John Moss said, "So we've learned that of course it's a very social event, we've also learned people often use it when they face situations of boredom or frustration, or just need a break, or go to a fiesta or have fun. So it's often used for both stress and relaxation."

The use, he said, is very similar to tobacco use. And just like tobacco, betel nut consumption can have severe consequences. "Betel nut by itself has already been classified as a group one human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research and Cancer," he continued. "Previously it was betel nut with tobacco and then they came out in 2003/2004 saying also betel nut by itself."

This means chewing actually causes cancer, particularly oral cancer. "Betel nut use also affects the risk for diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and obesity," Dr. Moss warned.

One of the worst effects is oral submucus fibrosis, which can stiffen your gum bands to the point you are no longer able to open or close your mouth. The disease is irreversible. Diseases such as these drew participants to UOG's pilot betel nut cessation classes last year. The program is the first of its kind in the world.

"Right now, we're holding them on 9:30am on Saturdays and we are also thinking about opening up the afternoons, too, if people are interested," said Dr. Moss.
