Guam - In preparation for Typhoon Vongfong hundreds of island residents sought shelter from the storm in one of the six shelters that initially opened in the north, central and southern parts of Guam.

Department of Education deputy superintendent Rob Malay told KUAM News, "We started with six and we brought one more on board so we actually operated seven shelters throughout the duration of the typhoon total of 893 Guamanians went to the shelter."

Taking advantage of the safety the shelters had to offer the three northern shelters Machanaonao Elementary, Astumbo Elementary and Maria Ulloa Elementary filled to capacity. Malay continued, "They took on the majority of the 893 they had a total 748 combined all reports were good and positive throughout the night and throughout the course of the typhoon."

Malay attributes the smooth running of the shelters to the shelter managers and their partnership with the Guam Police Department in ensuring that order was in place and everyone followed the shelter rules, adding, "As we got closer to being returned to Condition of Readiness 4 we worked really closely with the Mayors Council, with the Department of Public Works to make sure that we were able to return the people that went to the shelters either to their additional sheltering if they needed it or to the mayor's office to get transportation back to their residents."

And since Guam has been returned to COR4, DOE has conducted final assessments for damages at all 40 island public schools and their Central Offices. "Most of the reports that are coming in that I have seen no damage to report at this time, so that's a good thing. Our facilities held up pretty well," he said.

According to Malay all public schools will be fully operational and classes will resume tomorrow morning.
