The Filipino Community of Guam is turning a long-standing vision into reality—with the groundbreaking of a new bench project at Ypao Beach Park last weekend.

At the Ypao Beach Park Amphitheater, a vision more than a decade in the making is finally taking shape—a project rooted in community, culture, and connection. What started back in 2015 as an idea from former president Nita Baldovino is now becoming reality—brought to life under the leadership of current president Edna Rebanal and a team determined to give back to the island.

Acting Governor Joshua Tenorio said, "Nita is actually the godmother of Ypao. Because in every single improvement project she's been the one pushing, she pushed the Rotary Club of Guam, she pushed the FCG, she pushes different community groups because this really is one of the treasures of Guam."

The Filipino Community of Guam Bench Project will add 36 concrete benches—each designed with latte stone-inspired elements—creating a welcoming space for families, performances, and community gatherings. But this project is about more than just seating—it’s about building a legacy.

"I'm directing and provide the resources to make sure the pavilion is painted, and repaired because we dont want to be Chamorro right, you don't want to be mamaolao this pavilion is symbol of friendship and love. Between the Chamorro and Filipino people, between all the people of Guam and all the Guamanians this is a place where many communities come together and this is one of the treasures of the island," she said.

Organizers say each bench will also serve as a symbol of community support—with families, businesses, and organizations able to sponsor a bench and leave their mark on a space meant for everyone. From a simple idea to a lasting addition to one of Guam’s most beloved parks—this project reflects the power of collaboration and the spirit of inafamoalek.
