Guam - For the past 80 years, today May 22nd has been designated as National Maritime Day throughout the United States it's no different here at home. Today Acting Governor Ray Tenorio proclaimed Guam Maritime Day urging the people of Guam to celebrate and honor the efforts of the US Merchant Marines and the maritime industry.

Military Sealift Command commanding officer Joe Casale said, "Today, we recognize the efforts of mariners, here on Guam and throughout the world, who promote commerce and strengthen our economic security by keeping the oceans open to trade. Time and again, mariners have demonstrated their willingness and ability to meet daunting challenges. As America expands its overseas markets, the agencies in the maritime industry have an important role in driving progress and prosperity through our nation and its territories."

Congress first designated May 22 as National Maritime Day back in 1933.
