Guam - The Pacific Judicial Conference on Juvenile Justice kicked off today with an address from Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno of the Philippines.
Sereno noted that despite efforts to preserve the welfare of the family, outside influences only complicate their efforts.
"Commercial media and social media, and even the internet have made our ability to create protective walls for our families more difficult. Our families are more open to influences from the outside regardless of the fact that we have a largely predominant catholic majority," she said.
With cases involving everything from child neglect to child pornography, Sereno added that family courts truly need to be smart in how they address the emotional needs of children. She added that resources continue to be a battle for her country as there are only 118 family courts for a 100 million population.
