There's good news for the island’s soon-to-be-assisted living facility, as the Department of Public Health and Social Services received a generous donation from a local church.

Guam’s assisted living facility, which will be the first of its kind from the government once it opens, received donations from the Church of Latter-Day Saints. Welfare and self-reliance manager Brett Child says the church assisted with outfitting some of the rooms. "We’re putting everything from ovens and new washing machines to couches…refrigerators and assisted mobility devises, some shower chairs and a variety of other things to help equip each of the rooms," he told KUAM News,

Public Health deputy director Amanda Shelton says that the assisted living facility in Tamuning was meant to assist the Guam Memorial Hospital and the Guam Regional Medical City as means to decompress their social cases who are staying in the hospital but may not need full service of care from that type of facility.

Shelton said, “So this will be a facility where those folks can live and get the help that need. Someone to check in on them on a daily basis. Someone to help support them or give them whatever kind of assistance they need." Shelton also told KUAM that Public Health aims to make the facility a place that feels like home for future residents.

The facility did not sustain any damages from the recent passage of Super Typhoon Sinlaku. However, there is currently no set date on when the facility will be open to accept residents.

“We’re still putting the finishing touches on everything. We want this to be the best facility possible for those coming to stay here," said Shelton. "So we need to do things to make sure the building is ada compliant. That’s what we’ve been doing for the past several months, working with our contractors to ensure the bathrooms, the entrances are wide enough, the entrance has ada capabilities for those who are needing a ramp. And we’re installing an elevator so that is what is really critical here, because we have rooms on the second and first floor. We want to make sure its fully operational.”

Shelton says there are around 30 rooms in the facility, some of which are single or double occupancy and reiterates that the facility is geared towards transitioning folks who may not necessarily be homeless but have been residing in the hospitals for several months to a year into a place where they can still care of them.
