The University of Guam will welcome Dr. Jalkennen Joseph, MD, author and physician, as the featured speaker for the 43rd Presidential Lecture Series on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. in the Multi‑Purpose Room at the Dr. Lucio C. Tan Student Success Center.

Along with the lecture, Dr. Joseph’s memoir, “Becoming an American Doctor,” is set to release. The book chronicles his journey from growing up in Pohnpei, Micronesia, to serving in the United States Air Force and ultimately becoming a physician.

Born and raised in Pohnpei, Dr. Joseph is a proud graduate of Simon Sanchez High School, Class of 1999. After completing ten years of military service in the U.S. Air Force, he pursued higher education and earned his medical degree from the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine, becoming only the second individual from Pohnpei to graduate from a U.S. medical school.

During his presentation, Dr. Joseph will share personal reflections on resilience, service, identity, and access to opportunity, with a special focus on inspiring Micronesian students who aspire to careers in healthcare and medicine. The event will include an interactive question‑and‑answer session.

Signed copies of “Becoming an American Doctor” will be available for purchase at the event.

“This lecture is about showing students that their background does not limit their future,” said Joseph. “My hope is that sharing my story helps young people believe that their dreams, especially in medicine and service, are possible.”
