Guam - Civilian Volunteer Police Reservist James Esperon is being held on $10,000 cash bail. Esperon is charged with 3rd degree criminal sexual conduct accused of sexually assaulting a female minor. Assistant Attorney General Rogelio Batarao told the judge that Esperon is an immediate threat to the victim and a potential flight risk.
"The defendant's context in this particular situation your honor because it involves a minor forcing a young girl against her will to have sex and when the girl wanted to call for help, he knocked down the phone out of her hand," he said.
Esperon's attorney, Curtis Van De Veld, asked the court to release his client on $5,000 or to a third-party custodian once one is identified. The police reservist faces three to ten years behind bars with 5 to 25 years if convicted of a special enhancement. The judge imposed the $10,000 bail and Esperon is scheduled to appear back in court on March 24.
