The search is intensifying for the missing cargo vessel Mariana after a possible breakthrough in the waters north of the Marianas.

The U.S. Coast Guard says an HC-130 Hercules aircrew from Air Station Barbers Point spotted an overturned vessel early Saturday morning about 34 nautical miles northeast of Pagan—roughly 100 nautical miles from the cargo ship’s last known position.

Rescue teams are now working to confirm whether the vessel is the Mariana, a 145-foot U.S.-registered cargo ship that reported engine failure Wednesday with six people onboard about 140 miles north-northwest of Saipan.

Communication with the vessel was lost Wednesday evening and has not been reestablished.

Multi-agency search efforts are ongoing, with U.S. Coast Guard aircrews, a U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon aircraft, and Japan Coast Guard teams assisting in the operation.
