DOE contends UMS gym ready for opening

Guam - Despite a failing grade from Guam Fire Department inspectors last week, the Department of Education maintains it's ready to open the Untalan Middle School gymnasium.
DOE superintendent Jon Fernandez says the confusion may have been a result of GFD including the main facility in the inspection.
"We feel like its ready to go the Guam Fire Department did come in and they looked at both projects - one is the ums gym and also the renovations on the rest of the school campus and I think they found problems with the main property, not the gym but they've held up both permits until we're able to respond to what they found.," he said.
Orion Contractors and Certifier Phoenix Pacific received a failing grade after inspectors noticed a deviation from the approved fire alarm system plan as well issues with the sound system.
Fernandez says he's ready to work with GFD to resolve the issues. Meanwhile, Fernandez hopes to have renovations to the main campus start in the summer months as an invitation for bid has been released. He hopes to open the Barrigada campus in time for School Year 2014-2015.
