GUAM - Legislation aimed at implementing a universal helmet law is being heard this hour at the Guam Legislature.

Senator Tommy Morrison introduced Bill 87 back in April and says the measure is not an attack on the motorcycle community rather its about the alarming statistics related to injuries and fatalities for those motorcyclists who don't wear helmets.

"As a lawmaker you look at this data, and you just can't turn a blind eye to it or else I won't be doing my job. I want to ensure the people out there that I'm bringing the data to the forefront and that's what it's really about and get their view point and see where we can go from this and save lives" the senator implored.

Morrison says while those in the motorcycle community may argue that it's more about freedom of choice, he says the data is clear locally and consistent nationally. Morrison has stated data shows un helmeted riders are 40-percent more likely to die from head injury than someone who was wearing a helmet. The hearing is ongoing at the Guam Legislature public hearing.
