Guam - No plea deal. That's the message Monique Baza has made clear to the Attorney General's Office. Baza was the victim in the Crown Bakery kidnapping and the individual who has spurred a community-wide effort to effectuate change and more communication at the AG's Office.
Today Baza's perpetrator, Raymond Tedtaotao Camacho, was scheduled to appear in court, but the Department of Corrections brought the wrong defendant. The defense is still waiting on surveillance video that must be reformatted for viewing.
Assistant AG Gerald Henderson informed the court that there is also "further negotiation" ongoing and that he must "talk to the victim". Chief Prosecutor Basil O'Mallan told KUAM News today that the prosecution has not accepted any plea offer for Camacho, but the defense has requested to submit one but has yet to do so. Baza tells KUAM News she has made it clear she doesn't want Camacho to be given any second chance and doesn't want the government to entertain any plea offer.
Baza was told Camacho still faces life without parole and that no deal is on the table. Camacho is scheduled to appear back in court for a continued criminal trial setting on June 10.
Meanwhile, it should be noted that Judge Anita Sukola is growing extremely frustrated with the AG's Office and continued delays in getting discovery to the defense in numerous criminal cases. The judge exclaimed, "There's a problem with the system!", adding there are repeated delays and defendants' constitutional rights are not being met at a speedy, rapid rate.
