The University of Guam and its partners are working to bring a critically endangered tree species back to the wild.

UOG’s Center for Island Sustainability and Sea Grant, along with the Guam Preservation Trust and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, hosted an outplanting event at the Atantåno Heritage Preserve in Santa Rita.

The effort focused on reintroducing the critically endangered Serianthes Nelsonii, known locally as Håyun Lågu, a tree species found only on Guam and Rota.

Officials say the seedlings were grown through collaboration with rota forestry and then planted back into their natural habitat. The trees were also protected with pest cages to help improve their chances of survival.

Organizers say the species was once found across southern Guam but has become rare due to damage from insect pests. Officials add that continued partnerships, community involvement, and regular monitoring will play a key role in the long-term recovery of the species.
