Guam - Bills to bring technology to kindergarten classrooms, an amendment to procurement laws for the Guam Community College, and another protecting student information received full support at today's public hearings. Bill 51 introduced by Senators Brant McCreadie and Aline Yamashita would pilot a supply of e-readers or tablets for kindergarten students in three elementary schools.
DOE deputy superintendent Joe Sanchez on behalf of superintendent Jon Fernandez testified in favor of the bill on conditions that funding be identified. "We request that the committee ensure that this does not become an unfunded mandate which we will be unable to fulfill and implement," he said.
Meanwhile, GCC president Mary Okada testified in favor of Bill 53 introduced by Vice Speaker B.J. Cruz, which amends GCC procurement laws to unify with that of GovGuam's.
Lastly, DOE and the Guam Police Department showed their support for Bill 58 proposed by Senator Tony Ada relative to protecting student information in order to enhance protocol for criminal investigations.
