Taijeron returns to GEC board

By KUAM NewsGuam - A familiar face graced the Guam Election Commission as Alice Taijeron return to a post she once held a few years ago. Taijeron is the new democratic member of the commission after officially being sworn in by chairman Joe Mesa during its Wednesday regular meeting.
She joins the commission after Governor Eddie Calvo appointed her as a democratic member of the GEC based off the recommendation by the Democratic Party of Guam. Taijeron replaces Chris Carillo, who resigned earlier this month after being arrested on drug possession and importation charges.
Meanwhile, relative to wrapping up matters involving the 2010 and 2012 elections, GEC executive director Maria Pangelinan discussed purging over 4,700 voters who failed to vote in the past two consecutive general elections. The commission raised concern over the costs to follow the new mandates which includes mailing out two notices to the voters - one that they're going to be purged with the a second notice telling them they've officially been purged - along with publishing the list of names in a publication of daily circulation. The costs to mail out notices is estimated at $5,000 whereas the publication of names in a newspaper is $8,000.
Commissioners suggested asking lawmakers to amend the law to simply just post the names on the GEC's website or at the respective mayor's offices or possibly asking the legislature to fund their mandate.
The GEC meanwhile was set to hold elections for its new chair and vice chairperson but due to the absence of vice chairman don weakly, the GEC moved to table the elections when it reconvenes next Thursday, March 28 at 12:01pm.
