Edu-Board chairman wants standards revisited

Guam - Guam Education Board chairman Dr. Jose Cruz is looking to revisit teacher standards. During today's table talks on education Cruz was open minded to using composite PRAXIS scores and working with the Guam Commission for Educator Certification, which presently believes accepting composite scores verses individual scores is lowering teacher standards.
"I'm suggesting to them that it's not really lowering the standards it really merits an attention to standards because it hasn't been touched for ten years," he said.
Over 40 DOE teachers failed to meet certification requirements of a minimum grade of 173 in reading, 170 in writing, and 170 in math. Although most are still with the department, many are now in limited-term status. Cruz hopes to get more information from other states as well as locally on how teacher hopefuls are scoring.
