Fate of DOE building in limbo
by Krystal Paco
Guam - It was last year the Guam Fire Department issued a notice of hazard to the dilapidated Department of Administration and Department of Education building in Hagatna. But with news last week that DOA will be moving to the ITC Building in Tamuning, DOE is left weighing its options.
DOE superintendent Jon Fernandez says he continues to work with the Legislature and Adelup as Governor Eddie Calvo has expressed plans to tear down the building as part of the Hagatna revitalization. He said, "Our preference is try to reduce the amount of money we're spending on headquarters but meet the basic health and safety needs, and if that's here at this location that might work for us if not we're open to discussion."
Up for discussion is the possibility of moving to the CoreTech facility in Tiyan, which is currently being used as a temporary home for Untalan Middle School. In the meantime, DOE has set aside $416,000 from their FY2014 budget for renovations or relocation of the Central Office.
