Guam - Emmanuel Cepeda pleaded not guilty in the Superior Court of Guam today, but he may change that to not guilty by reason of mental illness, disease or defect at a later time. His attorney, Jeff Warfield, tells KUAM News the defense asked the judge for a forensic evaluation because they anticipate his mental state may be an issue.

Cepeda is charged with aggravated murder for the shooting death of his estranged wife, Emma Catapang Cepeda.

Cepeda had been court-ordered to stay away from Emma and their three children.  A police investigation is underway to determine whether Emma Cepeda had sought police help when Emmanuel allegedly broke the conditions of the protective order back in January.

The court has ordered that a psychological evaluation be conducted within the next ten days. Another hearing is scheduled for later this month.
