Village of Care launch
Village of Care launch
A new community-driven effort is taking shape to support mothers and families across Guam.
The Birthworkers of Color Collective is expanding its maternal and infant health initiatives with the launch of “Village Of Care”—a series of free monthly workshops focused on pregnancy, birth, and early parenting.
Led by trained doulas, the workshops aim to create safe, culturally relevant spaces where families can learn practical skills, access resources, and build support systems. Topics will range from newborn care and infant feeding to baby sign language and postpartum education.
The collective says the effort comes as maternal and infant health disparities on Guam remain higher than the national average—highlighting the need for increased education and support services.
Since launching on island in 2023, the organization has trained more than 40 birthworkers and continues to advocate for expanded access to doula care, including Medicaid and insurance coverage.
The first workshops are set for April 9th in Hagåtña and April 16th in Sinajana—both free and open to the community.
In addition to education, the group is also rolling out a free and sliding-scale doula services program to help families access care throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
Organizers say the goal is simple—build a stronger network of care across the island, because community care takes a village.
