Guam - Now that they're finished with the handcount of ballots from the 2010 general election, the Guam Election Commission is now focusing on other matters including populating the Decolonization Registry. GEC executive director Maria Pangelinan says with over six thousand people signed up for the decolonization registry, she met with commission on decolonization executive director Ed Alvarez this morning to look at other avenues to populate the registry.
She says the biggest challenge is education, noting, "So people are still hesitant at what does free association get, what does independence get and what does statehood get me and when is the plebiscite? People don't know, we don't know when the plebiscite is and that may be a little of a challenge to get people to register."
Pangelinan adds the GEC is also looking at ways to fulfill a recent public law enacted late last year that provides a mechanism to enhance the registration process of the Guam Decolonization Registry.
