Rodriguez concerned with new hospital QC
Guam - The economics of healthcare in the Government of Guam was the focus of discussion during Thursday night's Guam Medical Association meeting. Healthcare Committee chair Senator Dennis Rodriguez, Jr. provided insight on the matter, but also answered questions about his thoughts on a pending qualifying certificate application that was submitted by Guam Regional Medical City.
GMA president Dr. Tom Shieh says many in the medical community believe giving a QC to the new hospital would be unfair. "I don't think we can afford any QCs, however, I know this is a tool, and incentive that lures investors here this is an issue that I definitely will be watching very carefully," Rodriguez said. "But I don't feel that we can afford any new wavers. Especially in this field."
The GRMC's application is currently under review by the Guam Economic Development Authority. Guam Healthcare and Hospital Development Foundation representatives have said the QC is needed as the facility will help fill a need in the healthcare industry and create jobs and keep residents from having to go off-island for treatment.
