GRRP to address areas of concern for landfill application

Guam - Guam Resource Recovery Partners is working to address three specific areas of concern in order to obtain a solid waste landfill permit for Guatali. Guam Environmental Protection Agency administrator Eric Palacios decided to rescind the denial of the company's permit. GRRP now has 30 days to provide financial assurances that it is capable of building the landfill and that it has adequate leachate control to ensure there is no harm to the environment.
"The third one has to do with the CLTC lease that we have at Guatali. The Chamorro Land Trust is our landlord for that land at Guatali and the lease is for a lesser period of time than what is required by the law to take care of that landfill once we close it," he explained.
GRRP's Dave Sablan says the company will provide EPA with assurances that it will continue to maintain the property 30 years after the landfill is closed no matter who owns the property. Sablan adds GRRP is pleased with the decision to rescind the denial and says it helps avoid a long drawn out appeal process that had just begun.
He believes most of the concerns can be addressed within the next 30 days and is hopeful a permit will be granted before the summer.
