Guam - Governor Eddie Baza Calvo, Police Chief Fred Bordallo and Guam Visitors Bureau Board Chairperson Mark Baldyga held a press conference just after 1 o'clock Wednesday morning to discuss the tragedy that occurred in Tumon last night in which an estimated 14 tourists were injured after a man sped from the Globe Night Club sidewalk hitting pedestrians and then running into the ABC Store in Tumon underneath the Outrigger Resort where he got out and starting stabbing people. Three people are confirmed dead.

An eyewitness reported that the man crashed into the store.

The remaining victims were transported to the Guam Memorial Hospital for treatment. Their conditions are not known at this time. "As a father and a husband I am so deeply saddened about this tragedy that this has occurred this evening on Guam. We all know living in this island, that something like this is an anamoly and for it to strike home it is hurtful," said Governor Calvo.

Chief Bordallo said currently the case is classified as a death investigation until all the details are sorted out. Bordallo said the suspect who is described as a young adult is currently in custody. "Our Criminal Investigation Division and Highway Patrol are coordinating their investigating agents to ensure the crime scene is protected because they have a lot of evidence that needs to be collected and I have been informed the Medical Examiner has been contacted," he added.

Governor Calvo said he has spoken with representatives from the Japan Consul General's Office in Guam to assure them this has the full attention of his administration and that the perpetrator will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The Governor expressed his condolences to all the families and victims. He also said GVB is providing translation services at the hospital.

GVB Board Chairman Mark Baldyga also offered his condolences and said that they will do everything they can to help the families. Like the Governor he was saddened and shocked about what occurred, "I have lived in Guam for 25 years and I've never seen anything like this in the 25 years that I have lived here nothing even this close," he said.  Baldyga reiterated that this is an anomaly and emphasized that Guam is the safest destination in the entire region.
