Guam - Legislation to shore up security at our island's public schools had a public hearing today. Bill 1 was introduced by Speaker Judi Won Pat and Senator Tina Rose Muna Barnes. It would authorize the purchase and installation of security cameras in our island's public schools.  The legislation received support from the department of education which has often been targeted by criminals.

Most recently it was subject to a rash of copper wire thefts. DOE deputy superintendent Rob Malay said, "Today our public schools continue to experience a high number of breakins and vandalism these incidents taken together have cost DOE an estimated $1.6 million over the last three years, which accounts for a loss in replacement of property as well labor and material for facility repairs."

Malay adds the proposed investment would help reassure employees, students and their families that the schools remain as safe learning environments.
