Guam residents with disabilities could finally gain access to supplemental security income under new bipartisan legislation introduced in congress.

Congressman James Moylan joined a group of lawmakers in introducing the Supplemental Security Income Restoration Act, alongside Representative Adelita Grijalva of Arizona, US Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, and Representative Jan Schakowsky of Illinois.

The bill would extend SSI eligibility to residents of Guam and other US territories. The federal program provides monthly financial assistance to seniors and individuals who are blind or living with disabilities, but eligible residents of Guam have long been excluded despite being American citizens.

Moylan said, "No American should ever have to choose between the support they need and the home they love. ssi was created to provide basic level of financial support to disabled Americans and those with limited means. That mission should not stop at a shoreline. Guam is part of the unites states."

The legislation would also modernize SSI rules nationwide by increasing asset limits, updating income exclusions so recipients can work without immediately losing benefits, and raising benefit levels to match the federal poverty line.
