Guam - U.S. Coast Guard Sector Guam along with the Guam Environmental Protection Agency and Port Police were called to F-1 Pier at on Cabras Island early this morning after a reported oil spill. According to Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Morgan Roper, around 4 this morning the Tristar facility was conducting transfer operations of high sulfur diesel oil to the Guam Power Authority when the pipes burst. An estimated 200 gallons of oil spilled throughout the area.

"Majority of what you can see as far as damage is all on land around the facility where the pipes are and where the transfer is happening in the water fortunately most of it is contained already they had some boom in place already and that's actually where a majority of what went into the water again it was already contained so the oil spill response contractor that tri star has working on the cleanup was able to put an additional boom around the area where diesel went into the water and then the facility responders are doing a great job they were on scene immediately and where also using absorbent pads and absorbent booms to pick up what was left in the water," he said.

Roper adds the incident was accidental and did not impede operations into Apra Harbor. Guam EPA director Eric Palacios states the agency will make sure regulations and proper disposal is conducted during the cleanup.
