Guam - It was last December the keys to F.Q. Sanchez Elementary School were handed over to the Umatac Mayor's Office, but the Department of Parks & Recreations is concerned what's become of the building since. DPR director Pete Calvo says the school has significant historical value to the island and must be protected.
"There's been an MOA written to allow for the mayor's office to undertake the property and use the property. Our understanding is that there may be some damage to the property. We don't know but we'll go down there an investigate it," he explained.
The school was supposed to open as a charter school to focus on perpetuating the Chamorro language and culture. Calvo will send a team to investigate the status of the building later this week. If there's extensive damage, DPR may consider taking back the building.
