The latest acts of gun violence have the nation concerned.

Recently, three members of the University of Virginia's football team were gunned down in cold blood.

This incident comes as the events of the Uvalde massacre are still fresh in people’s minds.

Guam is watching closely.

The University of Guam is arming its staff with the skills of what to do in the event of an active shooter on campus, UOG Safety Administrator Alfred Garrido said.

"We all wanted to be proactive and just bring this type of training out to our community, in hopes that we can provide our staff with the knowledge to keep in their toolbox to help keep themselves safe and who better to work with than our law enforcement partners at Homeland Security and the Marianas Fusion Center to bring that training here," he said.

Airport police officer II and intelligence analyst, Joseph Anderson, spearheaded the training and taught the UOG staff the do’s and don’ts if ever coming face to face with a gunman.

"I’m teaching them the facts and events of past incidents of an active shooter," he said. "The main thing that I want the staff to come out of this training is the run, hide, fight. Those are the three main things that are going to make them survive through the incident."

The UOG staff was put through real-life scenarios - each given a time limit to barricade the doors.

Participants also fired off blank rounds during the training.

"That gives them that knowledge of how that gunshot sounds within close proximity and then we’ll have them come into the room, I’ll take a shot outside and then that’s when they’ll have that knowledge of what it sounds outside, instead of inside," Anderson said.

Attendees also practiced how to hide and arm themselves.

The university has more active shooter training sessions planned for tomorrow at the campus.

Its training officials say is a proactive approach and necessary to save lives.
