Volunteers build "rain garden" in Piti

Guam - Several volunteers came out to Santos Memorial Park in Piti this afternoon to build a rain garden. And according to Center for Watershed Protection program director David Hirschman, he hoped to teach the impacts of flooding and erosion caused by runoff and how it impacts water quality and water pollution on island.

"So it's called a rain garden because it is a garden but instead of being mounted up like some gardens are like in parking lots. So it's scooped out so it's like the shape of contact lenses, so it collects the water and as the water sits in there and moves through the sands and the plants and the mulch, a lot of the pollutants are taken out of the water," he explained.

The project was done about six months ago in Saipan and is funded by the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program.
