Guam - Better safe than sorry. George Washington High School assistant principal Gaylene Cruz asks those traveling along the Mangilao school take caution. Cruz says there was a close call last week as a student was almost hit by an oncoming car during the heavy rains.

"We're asking parents and everybody: this is a school zone, they need to slow down, they need to be aware that we do have pedestrians and they need to be courteous to our students. We have cars speeding by and even though there are students waiting to cross, they won't even stop for the kids," she added.

Cruz is working with the Department of Public Works to correct the situation as there is no signage, a fading crosswalk, and little shoulder room for pedestrians. DPW deputy director Carl Dominguez says he expects to address the issue in the next few weeks.
