Driver flees after hitting two JFK students

Guam - A 24-year-old Dededo man is being held on $100,000 cash bail, accused of nearly taking the lives of two female students early this morning while in a drunken stupor. Several people who were eyewitnesses to the event recalled their experience.
John F. Kennedy High School students Juan Salas and Daelene Sanchez went to a bus stop off of Ysengsong Road in Dededo this morning as they do each weekday, waiting for the school bus. But this morning, the unthinkable happened. Salas recalled, "I was just on my phone and then all of a sudden I hear my cousins yelling and everything and I saw the car hit the girl and everything, so my friends and cousins went and put something under her head and everybody called the cops."
Added Sanchez, "We saw the car hit the two girls. One flew very far. We were all traumatized and scared we didn't know what to do."
The students were horrified at what they saw. Kayleen Tudela says the driver of a 2005 Acura Integra didn't seem phased, saying, "He went faster when he hit them and just drove away."
Despite being in shock, the kids' instincts kicked in and they ran to help. "The one that got hurt bad. she looked very, very bad," Kenji Tudela described. "She looked like she was gonna pass, so we just hurried to call the ambulance. She was doing the head-nodding and stuff like that. We were checking to see if she will respond."
The 14- and 15-year-old girls were transported to the Guam Memorial Hospital in Tamuning; the latter admitted into the Pediatric Ward recovering from a fractured hip while the 14-year-old being treated and released. Guam Police Department spokesperson Officer A.J. Balajadia says thanks to another eyewitness police were able to catch the driver, who was identified as 24-year-old John Daniel Rengiil.
"We received an initial call from an eyewitness to that vehicle being on the roadway almost colliding with a school bus; the school bus took evasive action and avoid the collision," said Balajadia.
The suspect ended his reckless driving spree by parking at the Mobil gas station in Dededo. When officers arrived, he was passed out. The shattered windshield and broken side view mirror clearly evidence of the hit and run he fled from. Police say he was highly intoxicated - his blood alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit at .28.
KUAM news has learned that this isn't the first time Rengiil, who works for G4S Security, allegedly fled the scene. In fact, just two weeks ago he was cited on Route 15 for leaving the scene with property damage and driving on the wrong side of the road.
The students who helped tend to their classmates didn't go to school today because they were traumatized by what happened, but they're hoping today's incident will cause elected leaders to act. "I'm pretty stunned to ride the bus stop or anything," Salas admitted. "It's better if the mayor brings in the bus stops into our own road because that's already a dangerous hazard on the road, the bus stop being on the road."
Rengiil is being held on $100,000 cash bail, charged with driving under the influence, DUI with injuries, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.
