Yigo couple due in court for dump
Yigo resident and mayoral candidate Joseph S. Taitano and his wife Rosalind are scheduled to appear in the Superior Court of Guam on Friday.
Guam - Yigo resident and mayoral candidate Joseph S. Taitano and his wife Rosalind are scheduled to appear in the Superior Court of Guam on Friday. The Guam Environmental Protection Agency filed a civil lawsuit against the couple for running a massive illegal dump operation on their Yigo property.
The Taitanos were first issued a notice of violation more than a decade ago and were issued administrative penalties - but due to technical discrepancies they were dismissed. Instead of going back through the NOV process, the Guam EPA opted to take the couple straight to court.
Agency spokesperson Tammy Jo Anderson Taft told KUAM News, "We're asking for damages we're asking for lots of things in the case given the enormity of the environmental violation, that we allege has happened. We're confident that we can bring this case to a closure and that we can move forward with fixing the situation."
The Guam EPA is asking the Superior Court to order the Taitanos to pay no less than $250,000 in damages and $3.6 million in penalties each.
