Guam - Jonathan Walter Cruz has pleaded guilty to malicious use of fire with personal injury. He faces a minimum of 7 years behind bars and up to a maximum sentence of 40 years behind bars.

On May 18, 2010, Cruz used his shirt to start a fire at the National Office Supply building in Barrigada.  He admits to setting the fire to destroy any evidence of him breaking in and stealing money and other valuables. He stole $1,700 in cash and used it to take his girlfriend out to dinner and on a shopping spree.

Cruz was caught when officers found him at a makeshift campsite in Hagatna and they recovered a laptop and digital camera that were stolen from National Office Supply. Cruz was released from jail and is scheduled to return back to court on August 23 for a bail hearing.

Sentencing is set for November 29.
