Guam - Governor Eddie Calvo may need to declare an emergency in order to expedite the procurement of $150,000 for the Department of Education. According to DOE superintendent Jon Fernandez, the funding is necessary to follow through with double session at George Washington High School for the duration of first quarter. The Mangilao school will have 17 classrooms taken offline in order to undergo science, technology, engineering, and mathematics renovations.

The funding is part of the $60 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Money Act money set to expire on September 30. "It's funding from the ARRA trust fund," Fernandez said. "The same pot of funding we're using to push out all these other capital improvement projects 0436 we'll also use it to support the bus procurement...the procurement piece is always the more complicated and unpredictable aspect of it, so we're talking about the steps we might have to take to expedite procurement and just making sure there's a solution to this situation."

The Department of Public Works has agreed to provide the bus drivers and fulfill the bus routes if DOE can fork up the cash.
