Guam - Department of Corrections director Jose San Agustin has yet to go on his trip to visit the prison up in Saipan. San Agustin says he wants to take a firsthand look at the facility, as he plans to send some of the inmates on Guam up north. The idea came after the Bureau of Prisons informed the department Guam's inmates off-island would be sent back to the territory.

San Agustin says he hopes the transfer would alleviate some of the prison overcrowding.

Despite reports that the CNMI would be sending some of it's immigrations inmates to Guam, San Agustin says there has been no official discussion on that move. He told KUAM News, "I'll be very honest that we are prepared to do what we have to do of course many of this is me just standing by and when the agency does call requesting for support, that I'm prepared to do just that."

He says if the CNMI sends the inmates to Guam, DepCor would only be able to take up 35 inmates in its Hagatna facility. San Agustin hopes to visit Saipan this week.
