Guam - Two resolutions were heard this morning following Hollywood filmmaker and explorer James Cameron's historic dive down the Marianas Trench earlier this year. Resolution 405 would encourage the accurate location attribution of the Challenger Deep creating awareness of Guam, the CNMI and Micronesia along with securing potential benefits for its people.

Micronesian Image Institute founder and president Dan Ho discussed his dismay over other's coming into Guam's exclusive economic zones without royalty payments, application and permit fees that are similarly charged in many other jurisdictions.  "If James Cameron built an invisibility cloak, it's not okay that he can walk in to my house or your house undetected because he can, it's not his house and these waters are not his, they're ours," he said.

Department of Chamorro Affairs director Joseph Cameron meanwhile spoke in favor of Resolution 408, which requests that Guam be included as a full member of the Mariana Monument Advisory Council. "Both Resolutions 405 and 408 are clear in that Guam and CNMI's roles and rewards have been marginalized in this process 3349 and that the trench are mostly in the U.S. EEZ of Guam and Guam should have a representation on that particular body," he said.

The resolutions were introduced by Senators Rory Respicio and Aline Yamashita.
