Bio:
Karlo Dizon was born to Wilner and Loreto Dizon in Bataan, Philippines. He relocated to Guam with his family as a child to reside in the village of Dededo. Karlo studied at Juan M. Guerrero Elementary then attended Benavente Middle School. He is also a proud graduate of Simon A. Sanchez High School in Yigo. In high school Karlo, interned at KUAM as a teen reporter for 'The Beat"".
After high school Karlo moved to New Haven, Connecticut to attend Yale University, a prestigious Ivy League institution whose notable alumni include former presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. In his third year of college, Karlo was selected by the United States Department of State to work in the economics section of the American Embassy in Manila. He received his Bachelor's in political science and graduated with Distinction in 2006.
Upon completing his undergraduate studies, Karlo worked as a legal editor and researcher for the international law firm Sidley Austin at its Shanghai branch in China. Notable Sidley Austin alumni include President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama. While at Sidley, Karlo published an article in China Law and Practice, the leading business law journal in the country.
In 2008, Karlo was inspired by Barack Obama's run for presidency and came back to Guam to help establish the Obama Office in Hagåtña, the first ever presidential campaign headquarters on the island. After Obama's win on Guam, Karlo worked as a field organizer for the national campaign and managed the Obama headquarters in Spencer, Iowa. After the election, Karlo returned to China in Beijing where he worked at the Joint U.S.-China Collaboration on Clean Energy (JUCCCE), an international NGO. During his time in China Karlo also gained proficiency in Mandarin.
Karlo returned to Guam in 2010 to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), where he scored in the top 1%. Realizing that a global education would provide him a unique perspective in serving his community, Karlo pursued his Master's degree at the London School of Economics (LSE) where he graduated with Distinction in 2011. While in London, Karlo worked for the U.K. Parliament under Nia Griffith MP as a policy researcher and speechwriter. Karlo then moved to Washington D.C. after being selected to serve in the White House Internship Program, the most selective public leadership training program in the nation.
Upon completing his stint at the White House, Karlo saw the need for a new way forward in Guam's relationship with the United States. Karlo decided to run for Guam's lone seat in Congress after recognizing that a broader vision of the economy was needed. Whereas the politics of the past focused on receiving federal handouts, Karlo believes that the politics of the future requires a Delegate willing and able to grow Guam's economy on its own terms. As a Delegate, Karlo will focus on easing federal restrictions such as the Jones Act so that Guam can achieve economic self-determination through an economy that is robust and is unencumbered by constraints placed by Washington D.C.
