FESTPAC opening ceremonies held

Guam - Opening ceremonies were held today for the 11th Festival of the Pacific Arts in the Solomon Islands.  You can watch the "Olympics of arts and culture in the Pacific" on KUAM-TV11 from July 3-12starting at 6pm. We will then broadcast the closing ceremonies on July 13 at 3 in the afternoon.

Guam's delegation of 100 strong marched first in today's opening ceremony.  Close to 30 pacific island countries and territories are participating. The festival started in 1972, when the Conference of the South Pacific Commission came up with the idea to combat the erosion of  traditional customary practices. 

The theme of the festival is "Culture in Harmony with Nature".  The next FESTPAC is scheduled to be held in Guam in 2016.
