Guam - In a week since the Committee on Utilities discussed concerns with the Guam Power Authority over how 1,400 customers received drastic increases in their power bill, GPA has taken steps to correct the problem. According to general manager Joaquin Flores, GPA has been able to reclassify over 840 accounts to the proper rate class after qualifying due to their low consumption history.
An additional 208 accounts meanwhile will be moved to a lower rate class because of their trend toward lower consumption during the past six months or more. As a result, the total of 1,048 customers should receive a credit on either their June or July bills.
GPA will now work on the remaining 350 customers to determine the appropriate rate solution for these accounts which it hopes to have some resolution by the end of next week. Flores said, "With this approach, GPA is quickly correcting the rate classification problems for most of the affected customers while continuing to work on an appropriate resolution for the remaining customers," Flores says. "Customers affected should have received a letter notifying them of the matter advising them of action taken and a number to call if any questions remain, we want to resolve the unforeseen matter."
Flores adds GPA will file an emergency petition with the Public Utilities Commission to allow the change. In the meantime, GPA will process the credit in the anticipation that GPA and the PUC will arrive at an agreement with this proposed change by GPA.
