Guam - The Marcial Sablan Elementary School community has spoken, and they want 30 minutes of instructional time added to their school day. According to Department of Education deputy superintendent Rob Malay, school stakeholders are concerned their students aren't doing well in mathematics.

"Some of the schools are finding difficulty with the math scores they get year after year, so they want to try to target that as an area where they can make the gate and we've see the reports not just here locally, but nationwide where math is an issue," he said.

The Guam Education Board voted at Wednesday's meeting to add time to Marcial Sablan's school day as a pilot project. The board is reviewing other elementary schools, as there may be a need to realign how minutes are mandated. The school must also work with the Department of Public Works to arrange bussing.
