Guam - The Department of the Interior has awarded a little over a million dollars to the Guam Fire Department. According to Fire Chief Joey San Nicolas, it's funding the agency has been working on getting for the last three years.

He explained, "This is basically a grant that we've applied for since 2009, and it's been through the process and we were able to close it out just recently with the assistance of Guam's State Clearinghouse. Basically this is going towards our high-rise apparatus- a ladder truck, two rescue trucks and a fire boat."

According to DOI Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas Tony Babauta, who awarded the grant, he says he is pleased to respond to GFD's request for funding. In the current and past fiscal years, Babauta has approved two separate grants for Guam to purchase six ambulances, three of which are scheduled to arrive next month.
