Out of control inmate being sent back to Guam
by Nick Delgado
Guam - The Department of Corrections has plans to send some of its inmates on Guam to Saipan. DepCor director Jose San Agustin says his prison is just overcrowded, and the one in Saipan actually has additional cells to hold some of Guam's DOC population. However, San Agustin say he will first have to meet with prison officials in Saipan at the end the of the month after learning they too lack personnel and the ability to provide adequate medical and dental services.
"I'm trying to take a look at their facility," he said. "I understand their facility is more modern that was built by the federal government."
He says the idea to relocate some of the population came after the Bureau of Prisons informed him that they will be sending the 20 off-island inmates back to Guam due to their financial constraints and overcrowding. He adds at least one of those off island inmates, he declined to identify, is trouble for the stateside prison.
"He's been continuously very disrespectful and continuing to do harm in the facility he is assigned, which is in Kentucky - out of control."
It costs $600,000 a year for DepCor to pay for the inmates off-island. San Agustin will head to Saipan on June 28. Guam in the meantime has not received any inmates from Saipan.
